Make It Magical

The Merriest Morning

Everyone has different and equally wonderful little traditions during the holidays that bring a twinkle of magic to the air. Some we've inherited from our families, and others we've invented ourselves. Cheers to both!

At our home, Christmas isn’t so much a season as it is a full-blown theatrical production. Depending on the year, we might be hosting hot-cocoa-in-your-slippers or a soirée worthy of tiaras and elbow-length gloves. But mostly, we’re in our PJs.

On this particular Christmas, (shared in our book, Together at the Table) dawn had barely broken before we all stampeded toward the fireplace for a gift-opening jamboree. We always start with the stockings and then embark upon a one-at-a-time unveiling of presents that allows for each gift-giver and recipient to truly bask in a moment of delight together. This beloved tradition is inspired by David’s family in England, paragons of politesse and thoughtfulness, who naturally expect a gift recipient to announce three things they adore about the present along with their thank-you. Obviously, gifts are opened carefully, so as not to rip the paper, and all beautiful ribbons are saved so they can be used again. (We know you do this tooI’m looking at all the mothers and grandmothers out there.)

But in our house? That orderly ritual lasts for mere minutes before the dam bursts and everyone is unwrapping in gleeful chaos. At some point, hunger hits us like a sleigh to the shins: we’re famished. We blast Christmas music, herd everyone into the kitchen to make brunchstirring, sprinkling, and generally covering the room in a fine dusting of powdered sugar. PJs stay on, plates get filled, and we eat beside the tree in a state of pure hygge.

As for our tree? She’s a family scrapbook with branches. Every ornament carries hints of our shared history—treasures inherited from my grandfather, baubles we made ourselves, and everything in between. Instead of a glitzy topper, we always crown it with an exuberant, oversized bow: charming, and utterly “us.”

To all the Magic Makers out there that cook and plan and conjure magic in your homesfrom matching pajamas, to favorite recipes, to sparkling decorations, and late-night piles of dirty dishes—thank you for creating and upholding the magic of the holidays. We see you and send you our love!
